Sleewijk Brangus
Helgard Truter established the Sleewijk Brangus stud in 2006 on the farm Deelkop in the Brandfort district near Bloemfontein in the Free State. As is the case with the other members of the GeneLink breeders’ group, Helgard runs the stud based on sound scientific principles and, given his background in financial management he incorporated business principles into his breeding programme as well. For Helgard, traits such as calving ease, adaptability, visual appearance and economic viability were crucial in deciding on a breed – and the Brangus was the clear winner. The Sleewijk stud was started from scratch and Helgard used American Brangus bulls in all his embryo programmes to introduce new bloodlines to the stud. Artificial insemination is also used intensively to broaden the gene pool. Despite Sleewijk Brangus being a very young stud, it won the Breedplan Bull of the Year award at the 2010 national Brangus show.
