Smith Brangus
The Smith Brangus stud was established on the farm Gannahoek, between Kimberley and Douglas in the Northern Cape.
During the 1990′s Nico Smith began cross-breed Red Brangus bulls and Africaner-Hereford cross-breed cattle with astonishing results. By the time his eldest son, Kosie ( who had been working as a civil engineer in Bloemfontein ) started farming, Red Brangus was the breed of choice and the year 2000 saw them acquire stud-stock for the first time. At the 2003 National Auction they bought both the national and runner-up champions, and from them were bred a progeny that significantly impacted on the pedigree. A prime example is SB 05 135 and SB 05 145, bulls that delivered outstanding and well sought-after offspring at more than one auction.
With Nico’s experience and Kosie’s love for his cattle the following breeding objectives can be seen in the progeny of bulls that have been produced in the Smith Brangus stud:
- fertility
- low birth weight
- cows producing heavy weaned calves from the veldt with just a supplement( no feeding)
- cow-calf ratio 48%-50%
- good growth on the veldt and in feedlots
- Levi SB 9 540
- Mister XB 08 1
- SB 02 9
- SB 7 260
- SB 8 424
